Description
The ultra high performance speaker 16x12x5mm offers all the benefits of a standard 13x18mm speaker, however without the need to add a speaker enclosure box.
Please note, you must provide at least 1-2mm of height above this speaker in order to allow room for the speaker membrane to move up/down freely. You may also carefully cut off or bend off the two metal tabs that protrude from the sides of this speaker, not to be confused with the ribbon cable for connecting speaker wires.
This speaker is ideal for fitting in N, TT or HO scale locomotives where height is at a premium. Add two of these in parallel to add more volume in larger HO scale models. The performance is much better than using a 12×8, 15×8, 16×9 or 15x11mm type speaker driver.
Whilst slightly larger than the 14x10x4mm Ultra High Performance Speaker, this 16x12x5mm version performs much better in regards to volume output and bass response. The performance of this speaker is akin to a ZIMO Dumbo 18x13x13mm speaker.
This speaker is designed for use as a smartphone earpiece speaker, where it also functions as a secondary loudspeaker to the main loudspeaker located at the bottom of smartphones, to produce stereo sound. With space very limited in the earpiece region of a smartphone, it is designed to produce a lot of volume with great depth and clarity. To achieve this effect, the speaker is filled with tiny plastic balls. These plastic balls increase the internal surface area of the speaker, and prevent sound frequencies from running into each other, causing particular frequencies to cancel out. This allows the speaker to playback sound at an unexpectedly high volume, and with bass frequency response that you just wouldn’t expect. This speaker has to be experienced in a model locomotive to truly hear the difference!
To install, simply solder your speaker wires to the two solder pads provided on the ribbon cable. Take care when installing to ensure the ribbon cable is not pinched or bent excessively, care needs to be taken with the ribbon cable. Also ensure that the two speaker solder pads are electrically isolated from any internal metallic or electrically conductive parts inside a locomotive. Carefully wrapping the end of the ribbon cable in kapton tape after adding your speaker wires is recommended.
